Small Bites: Veteran Chef Takes Over at Canopy Central at Pike & Rose

Plus: Live karaoke at Caddies, Jerry’s Subs and Pizza in Silver Spring

January 10, 2019 12:00 p.m.

PM Hotel Group announced the arrival of Lance Mion as chef and drink lead enthusiast of the Canopy by Hilton located at Pike & Rose.

Mion has been in the industry for more than 25 years, including stints at the Westin Georgetown Hotel and St. Regis Hotel.

The menu at Canopy Central, the hotel’s restaurant, will remain largely unchanged, Mion said. He plans to expand the current selections and add a few promotions, such as an expanded happy hour menu and Sunday brunch.

“I’m introducing some new ideas but hopefully not to alienate our current regulars,” Mion said. “It’s not a huge departure from what we’re already doing, but there are new items that I think make better sense and will attract more people.”

The restaurant will focus on comfort-style food, along with additions based on the season, Mion said.

Oyster stew and crab bisque will be added for winter, with changes also coming to the seasonal drink options. Instead of discounted menu items, Mion will introduce tapas-style fare for happy hour, including nachos and rockfish tacos. The adjustments are meant to create a more welcoming environment for the nearby community.

“A lot of this is to attract local business,” Mion said. “We are in a neighborhood, we’re surrounding by residents. We’re trying to be a draw, not just a place to stay.”

Beginning this Friday, Caddies Bar & Grill in Bethesda will have live karaoke with the Harikaraoke Band & Gong Show.

At 9:30 p.m. every second Friday of the month, customers will be able to hop on stage and jam out to Top 40 hits.

Caddies did a trial run of the promotion last year and received positive reviews, said Lisa Gormley, catering and events manager.

Instead of pre-recorded songs, participants are able to perform with the band and “really get the rock-star experience,” Gormley said.

It’s free to take part in the event, there are drink specials all night and Caddies offers prizes for the most entertaining performances.

The only stipulation is Respect The Gong, a reference to the Harikaraoke Band accompaniment used when customers get too rowdy,

“If you get gonged, you gotta go,” Gormley said.

Jerry’s Subs and Pizza adds Silver Spring location

The chain has its corporate operations in Gaithersburg, and this location marks the fifth in Montgomery County.

The restaurant, at 8517 Colesville Road, features the typical Jerry’s fare, New York style pizza and more than a dozen sub options.

The sandwiches range from $5 to $11 depending on size. Small pizzas run about the same, while mediums are between $10 and $16 with larges costing a few bucks more.

There are now two locations in Silver Spring, the downtown one joining the Aspen Hill Shopping Center shop. A former location at 8647 16th St. has closed.

The arrival of Jerry’s Subs and Pizza was first reported by Source of the Spring.
