Md. Senate president Miller receiving prostate cancer treatment

Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. (D-Calvert) said Wednesday he would be making an announcement about his health on Thursday. Sources have said the 76-year-old is being treated for prostate cancer. [Maryland Matters]

Nonprofits on hold during shutdown

Services such as food stamps, housing subsidies and cash welfare benefits have been depleted during the shutdown due to a lack of funds. Reserves for the various agencies allow some to operate for the time being, but not for long. [Washington Post]
