North Potomac girl starts business to help family affected by shutdown

A fifth-grader from North Potomac recently started her own business to help her family while her mother, a Food and Drug Administration employee, is furloughed. Bella Berrellez is selling “Bella’s Sweet Scrubs” for $7 on Etsy. The homemade sugar scrubs are used in the shower to soften skin. For an extra 50 cents, Berrellez delivers to those who live nearby.  [WJLA]

Bethesda resident Wayne Rooney arrested for public intoxication

Authorities said Sunday that Rooney was taken into custody last month after he caused an alarm to go off at Dulles International Airport in Virginia. He was charged with misdemeanor public intoxication and taken to a county jail to sober up. Rooney currently resides in a capital suburb of Bethesda, having joined D.C. United this year after a long career with Manchester United in the English Premier League. [Washington Post]

Maryland Senate working on back pay bill for government employees

Maryland’s Senate delegation last week reintroduced legislation to guarantee workers furloughed by the government shutdown will receive missed wages once the shutdown ends. “We want to let federal workers know that they won’t be political pawns [in negotiations],” Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin said.
