Student school board member applications open
The filing period for Montgomery County Public Schools students to announce candidacy for the lone student position on the county Board of Education has begun.
The filing period runs until Jan. 24, after which a mandatory candidates’ meeting will be held.
A nominating convention is scheduled for Feb. 20 at Watkins Mill High School, where delegates from each county middle and high school will convene and select two finalists. The finalists will campaign through April 24, and all 85,000 middle and high school students will vote in a general election that day to decide the 42nd student member of the board.
Richard Montgomery senior Ananya Tadikonda was sworn in as the 41st student board member last summer and her term will expire in July.
Student board members are elected to serve as a voice for the 163,000 students in Montgomery County Public Schools. They receive a $5,000 scholarship and have full voting rights on the board.
Mental health forum scheduled
The county’s public schools, in partnership with the Montgomery County Coalition of Parent Teacher Associations, will hold its second annual Mental Health and Wellness Forum on Jan. 12.
The forum will run from 1 to 5 p.m. at Earle B. Wood Middle School in Rockville and feature a keynote address from former school board member Jill Ortman-Fouse. Also scheduled is breakout sessions to discuss depression, anxiety, self-harm, treating trauma and LGBTQ issues.

Clarksburg students donate computer lab to nonprofit
The Montgomery County Students Information Technology Foundation Inc., Network Operations program at Clarksburg High School recently donated a computer lab to Our House Inc., in Brookeville.
Our House, a residential development program for men, will use the six computers to help participants become technologically literate, seek employment, obtain certification and work toward career readiness.
Clarksburg students equipped the computers with operating systems, keyboards and monitors.
The Information Technology Foundation was established by Montgomery County businesses and the county school district to provide hands-on computer technology training to high school students.
