A preliminary hearing for the Rockville man charged with murdering his mother outside a Rockville church has been set for Jan. 25.

Kevin Justin McGuigan, 21, was arrested Saturday at a Rockville gas station hours after his mother, Jaclyn McGuigan, 49, was found with fatal wounds outside St. Raphael Catholic Church about 6 p.m. Friday.

At a Monday bail review hearing, McGuigan was ordered held without bond at the county detention center and ordered to have a mental evaluation.

The public defender’s office, who is representing McGuigan, did not respond to a request for comment regarding McGuigan’s case Wednesday morning.

Police determined McGuigan was last seen leaving her Marwood Court residence with her son at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Witnesses at the scene heard loud screaming and observed McGuigan laying on the ground in front of the church with her son standing over her, police said.

Her son was arrested the next morning and charged with first-degree murder, police said.

The Washington Post reported McGuigan told a judge in 2016 her son was suffering from drug-induced paranoia and had threatened to kill her. She was granted a no-contact order against her son and he was ordered to move out of her house

NBC Washington reported Kevin McGuigan had a history of domestic violence, according to court documents. McGuigan’s brother told police Kevin had tried to strangle him two years ago, but he hadn’t reported the incident to police.
