More than 3,000 volunteers will take to area streets this weekend to collect a projected 170,000 cans of food for local food banks.
From 10 a.m. to about 1 p.m. Saturday, thousands of volunteers will collect bags of food left on porches of area residences and take them to the Geico Headquarters parking lot in Chevy Chase, where more than 75 food banks and homeless shelters from across the region will pick up donations for their organizations.
Local groups that receive food from the drive include Manna Food Center and the Spanish Catholic Center in Gaithersburg and Nourish Now in Rockville.
In its 31st year, the Greg Gannon Canned Food Drive was started by its namesake. Gannon continued the annual food drive from 1987 until his death in 2006, after which his brother, Rick Gannon, took over and continued the tradition.
The goal of the event is to lessen the food deficit in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, Rick Gannon said Thursday afternoon.
“This food drive is the story of how one man and one family carried out an idea that has inspired and energized countless families,” Gannon said.
