Updated at 11:20 p.m. Thursday: A woman was struck and fatally injured by a vehicle while crossing Old Georgetown Road at Kingswood in Bethesda at approximately 5:30 p.m. Thursday, according to Montgomery County police.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Pete Piringer reported the victim suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Police reported at 9:56 p.m. the victim succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.
The woman was identified as 74-year-old Dona Cicy H Amarasekara of Rollins Avenue in Rockville, according to police. Preliminary investigation revealed a 2017 Jeep Cherokee had exited the Beltway onto northbound Old Georgetown Road when it struck Amarasekara. The driver of the Jeep was identified as 45-year-old Sheikh Shehzad Parviz of Bells Mill Road in Bethesda. He was not injured in the incident.
Police closed northbound Old Georgetown Road at Kingswood Road and closed the northbound Old Georgetown Road exit from the Beltway while officers investigated the collision.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620.
A pedestrian was also struck Friday morning in the parking lot of the Giant grocery store on the 600 block of Hungerford Drive in Rockville. According to Montgomery County Police spokesperson Sgt. Rebecca Innocenti, the pedestrian was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
