Celebrity chef nominated for Nobel Peace Prize
Bethesda resident and celebrity chef Jose Andres was nominated for a 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian efforts in disaster areas around the world. Rep. John Delaney (D-Md.) confirmed on Monday that he nominated Andres. The five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee will announce the winners in October. Andres founded World Central Kitchen in 2010 and has since helped feed victims of natural disasters in Haiti, Puerto Rico, Florida and North Carolina, among other regions. [Washington Post]
Hogan redrawing congressional map
Gov. Larry Hogan (R) said an emergency commission will be created to develop a redistricting plan for the 6th Congressional District, which includes some of Montgomery County. A panel of federal judges ordered Maryland to submit a redrawn map of the district a few weeks ago. [New York Times]
Half of Amazon jobs tech-related
Only 25,000 of the 50,000 jobs created by the new Amazon headquarters locations in Crystal City and Long Island City, New York, will involve technology. The rest will be “administrative jobs, custodial staff, HR, all those things,” said New York Economic Development Corp. Vice President Eleni Bourinaris-Suarez. Hiring at the new locations is expected to begin next year. Amazon will receive performance-based incentives totaling $573 million for creating the 25,000 jobs in Crystal City with an average wage of $150,000. [The Business Journals]
