An altercation inside of a Wheaton sporting goods store may have led to a shooting in a nearby parking garage Wednesday night, according to police.

At approximately 7 p.m. police responded to reports that a vehicle had struck a brick support column outside of a Dick’s Sporting Goods store at Westfield Wheaton Plaza.

An adult female driver and juvenile passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash. An adult male passenger was found with a gunshot wound to the upper body, police said late Wednesday night.

Before the crash, police believe the male was involved in two altercations with a group of approximately six men at the mall. The victim was shot shortly after on the first level of a nearby parking garage. Authorities believe the driver was attempting to leave the scene of the shooting when the crash occurred.
