Three men were sentenced to decades in prison Tuesday for their involvement in an August 2017 armed home invasion and robbery during which five Silver Spring family members were held hostage overnight, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Terrence J. McGann sentenced Bobby Johnson, 27, to 40 years, 26-year-old Karon Sayles to 45 years and 20-year-old Dalik Oxley to 50 years on charges of burglary, robbery, home invasion, kidnapping, and assault. All three were residents of Suitland in Prince George’s County. Co-defendant Younus Alaameri , a resident of Boyds, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 30 years in prison and a fifth defendant was found involved as a juvenile respondent, officials said.
The three defendants were found guilty by a jury in Montgomery County Circuit Court on Aug. 31.
Court documents state the five suspects entered the apartment of David Rivera at 8808 Manchester Road under the guise of a residence inspection on Aug. 1 at approximately 9 p.m., and soon assaulted Rivera, his wife, Aracely Ochoa, and his father-in-law. Rivera was handcuffed and blindfolded while Ochoa’s hands were tied behind her back. One of the suspects knew Ochoa worked at the Check Cash Depot located at 8476 Piney Branch Road in Silver Spring and demanded the code to the alarm and the keys to doors of the store. One of the suspects raised a knife to Ochoa’s eye and threatened to remove it if she did not comply. The suspects took Ochoa to the Check Cash Depot but were unable to gain access, according to the documents.
Rivera was blindfolded, handcuffed and bound face down until the morning. One of the suspects had begun cutting Rivera on the neck and face when an altercation occurred, during which Rivera managed to get the knife from the suspect, who then fled. When one of the other suspects returned with Ochoa and saw Rivera had a knife, he also fled. Ochoa was then able to call police, according to the documents.
Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy announced the sentences on Tuesday.
“If not for the force of will to protect his family and survive the attack Mr. Rivera would have died at the hands of these men,” McCarthy said in a press release. “It is important to hold these violent home invaders accountable. They will spend decades behind bars.”
