Bicyclist Sustains Life-Threatening Injuries When Struck by Police Vehicle in Bethesda

Officer was responding to 'routine call for service,' did not have emergency lights activated

A bicyclist sustained life-threatening injuries Friday night after being struck by a Montgomery County police vehicle, according to police.

At approximately 11:10 p.m., police Officer James O’Rourke was driving in a marked police vehicle near the intersection of Connecticut Avenue and Jones Bridge Road in Bethesda when he struck a man riding a bicycle, police said.

Police said O’Rourke was responding to a “routine call for service,” and did not have emergency equipment activated at the time of the collision.

O’Rourke was not injured in the collision, but the bicyclist suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital.

The bicyclist’s identity was not immediately released, pending notification of family.
