The suspect shot by Montgomery County police officers in Germantown after allegedly directing a handgun toward them was charged Wednesday with six counts of first-degree assault, as Major Crimes Division detectives continue to investigate the incident.
Police responded to several reports around 2:42 p.m. Sunday of a man pointing a gun at numerous homes while in the parking area of the townhouse community on Cross Laurel Court, according to a police press release. Later identified as Devin Conlon Brunner, 26, of Cross Laurel Court, the suspect refused to obey repeated commands by officers to relinquish the weapon. When Brunner pointed the gun at the officers, four officers from the 5th District discharged their firearms, striking Brunner, police said.
The officers rendered first aid to Brunner, who was taken to a local hospital for treatment, where he remains. He is expected to survive, police said. No officers were harmed in the incident.
Brunner, who is being held on a no-bond status, is charged with four counts of first-degree assault against a police officer and two counts of first-degree assault against a resident. He allegedly pointed the handgun at a pair of townhouse residents as they observed from their window before turning it toward law enforcement, police said.
An investigation revealed Brunner’s weapon was a replica handgun, police said.
Footage from body cameras worn by responding officers has been reviewed by investigative personnel. Officers James Baker, Andres Naranjo-Cano, Mark Kopp and Sarah Obando of the Patrol Division discharged their handguns and have been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation proceeds, in accordance with protocol, police said.
