The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the Washington, D.C., region that begins at 4 a.m. Thursday and ends at 1 p.m. Up to 1 inch of snow and sleet accumulation is expected, with the potential of one-tenth of an inch of ice accumulation.
According to meteorologist Jason Samenow of The Washington Post’s Capital Weather Gang, the period between 7 and 11 a.m. will be the most dangerous for commuters because it includes the morning rush hour and temperatures will be close to freezing. Thursday’s high temperature is expected to be 36 degrees.
Montgomery Fire & Rescue Service spokesman Pete Piringer tweeted Wednesday the weather conditions could result in slippery roads and sidewalks, and that drivers should “use caution.”
The Montgomery County Department of Transportation’s Division of Highway Services tweeted that its storm operations center will be operating starting at 4 a.m. Thursday, when the weather advisory is in effect, in the event crews are needed.
As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, Montgomery County Public Schools had not issued an announcement about whether schools would close or open on a delayed schedule Thursday.
