More than 17 percent of Montgomery County residents have cast ballots prior to Tuesday’s general election, thanks to a large turnout on the eighth and final day of early voting.

There were 21,148 residents who voted Thursday, bringing the county’s final early vote tally to 113,315, according to the Maryland State Board of Elections. Statewide, 661,276 Marylanders have voted, or about 16 percent of eligible registered voters.

This year’s county turnout is still lower than the numbers tallied during the 2016 presidential election when more than 160,000 residents voted early. However, only 35,444 residents voted over the course of the eight-day early voting session for the 2014 mid-term election.

In addition to the early voting totals, 17,783 absentee ballots in Montgomery County had been received as of Thursday. Oct. 30 was the last day Maryland voters could request an absentee ballot by mail, but voters in Montgomery County may still do so in person by visiting the Montgomery County Board of Elections, 18753 N. Frederick Ave., Suite 210, Gaithersburg. Residents may request a ballot during the following hours:
