Amid what developers call a shortage of housing, a project to bring an array of new homes to a Gaithersburg neighborhood has kicked off.

Located at the crossroads of I-270 and Sam Eig Highway, developers of the Crown neighborhood previously completed construction on housing and retail space in two sections of the four-part neighborhood, and recently began construction on two 32-unit, four-story buildings.

The new buildings, called The Flats at Crown, will feature two-bedroom, two-bath condos with private balconies and with floor plans ranging from 1,274 to 1,668 square feet.

Units, which will sit atop a shared parking garage, are expected to begin selling in mid-2019 in the mid-$400,000 range, according to a press release on behalf of the developer, Pulte Homes.

“We are thrilled to be the first homebuilder to enter Crown East after our success over the years in this premier, walkable community,” said Jarod Blaney, division president at Pulte Homes Mid Atlantic.

Pulte has was an original builder in the Crown neighborhood.

Crown is a planned community on 182 acres of land, and when all construction is completed, it will encompass up to 2,250 residential units and 320,000 square feet of retail space, including the mixed-use neighborhood Downtown Crown, which features 260,000 square feet of restaurant and retail space, according to a press release from Pulte.

Crown West is described as an urban village with a spirit of innovation, Crown Central is designed to have a city-style atmosphere and Crown East, where The Flats at Crown will be, is described as a quiet oasis.
