Shake Shack, a popular burger chain founded on the streets of New York City in 2004, will open its new Potomac location in September, according to company spokesman Meg Castranova.

The chain is now hiringcashiers, cooks and counter service employees for the restaurant at 7997 Tuckerman Lane. It has applied for a liquor license from the Montgomery County Board of License Commissioners and a hearing on the application has been scheduled for 1 p.m. Aug. 2 in Rockville.

This will be the first local outpost of the chain, which has dozens of restaurants nationally, including three in Baltimore and six in Washington, D.C. Shake Shack serves burgers, chicken sandwiches, hot dogs and fries, as well as shakes and other desserts.

The opening of the restaurant is part of a revamping of the 1960s-era shopping center that includes the construction of two stand-alone buildings and the planned opening of other eateries to join those already there, such as The Grilled Oyster Co. and Lahinch Tavern and Grill.
