A pedestrian who was struck and dragged by a car along University Boulevard West in Wheaton on Saturday has died from his injuries, Montgomery County police said Monday.
Detectives are still investigating the collision that killed Edwin Diaz, 38, of the 10900 block of Inwood Avenue in Silver Spring.
The preliminary information indicates that Diaz, who was walking east on the University Boulevard sidewalk, was hit by a 2005 Toyota Camry as he was crossing the entrance to a business driveway near Amherst Avenue, according to police. It’s not clear what direction the Camry was traveling at the time.
At about 3:23 a.m., an officer driving in the same area spotted the Camry in an adjacent lane and noticed that something was lodged beneath the car, police reported. The officer made eye contact with the Camry driver, who reportedly sped up and turned from University Boulevard into the parking lot of a business, leaving Diaz lying on the roadway. At that point, the officer was able to determine that what he’d seen underneath the car was a person.
The Camry driver, Bianca Paola Machuca, 25, of Cedar Street in Hyattsville, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, police reported.
Diaz was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
