Five kayakers were rescued after they were separated from their boats on the Potomac River near Cabin John over the weekend.

The group of kayakers fell from their boats and were in distress at about 7 p.m. Saturday, according to Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service spokesman Pete Piringer. They were on the river in the area adjacent to Lock 8 of the C&O Canal.

County rescue crews responded on swift water boats and in a helicopter.

Piringer wrote on Twitter that some of the kayakers reached the shore of Minnie Island but got lost looking for the other boaters. Rescue crews eventually located two kayakers in the water, and swift water boats retrieved the others on the island.

None of the kayakers appeared to be injured, according to Piringer.
