The former Silver Spring district commander for the Montgomery County Department of Police has been officially approved as a new assistant police chief, according to the department.

The Montgomery County Council voted Tuesday to approve County Executive Ike Leggett’s appointment of Marcus Jones as assistant chief of the Investigative Services Bureau. The council also approved the promotion of Capt. William Montgomery as the new commander for the 3rd District.

The 3rd District covers a stretch of eastern Montgomery County from downtown Silver Spring to Burtonsville. It does not include Takoma Park, which has its own police force.

Jones and Montgomery were both serving in the roles in an acting capacity before they were officially approved, Sgt. Rebecca Innocenti, a department spokeswoman, said Wednesday. They assumed their official roles Tuesday after the council vote.

Jones fills a vacancy left by the departure of Assistant Chief Luther Reynolds, who in April became the police chief in Charleston, South Carolina.
