Car Crashes Through Pharmacy in Gaithersburg

No one was injured in latest of similar incidents in recent months

A car crashed into a pharmacy in Gaithersburg on Wednesday morning, leaving windows on two sides of the building shattered and scattering shelving and merchandise.

Several people were inside the Express Pharmacy at 16220 Frederick Road in the Shady Grove area, but no one was injured, Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service spokesman Pete Piringer said. The driver was evaluated for injuries but refused transport.

At about 10:40 a.m., a Lexus drove through the front glass storefront of the corner pharmacy, knocking over shelving and merchandise and pushing the material into another storefront window, which shattered on the other side of the shop.

“It appears the vehicle was in a parking space in front of pharmacy and instead of going backwards they went forwards across the sidewalk and into the building,” Piringer said.

The pharmacy is closed and a building inspector was called in to survey the damage.

The car is the latest of several to crash into Montgomery County businesses in recent months, and the third in just over a week. On Saturday, a car drove through the glass storefront of Richey & Co. Shoes in Rockville, injuring two people in the car and causing the store to temporarily close. It reopened Tuesday, though the window still needs to be replaced.

On March 26, a two-car crash in Germantown caused a truck to careen into a Chipotle restaurant on Century Boulevard. Both drivers were injured.

In February, a truck plowed into Fresh Baguette in Rockville after the driver apparently slid on ice in the parking lot. The crash took out a wall, but the bakery quickly replaced it and remains open.

In December, a car caused significant damage to the Kielbasa Factory in Rockville when it crashed into the building. The business reopened in mid-February.
