After an 80-year-old woman was found dead Friday in her Wheaton home, Montgomery County police charged her 22-year-old great-granddaughter with her murder.
Shannon Marci Jefferson Lozano was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Doris Elizabeth Shelton, who lived at the same address with her in the 10500 block of Cascade Place, according to a police press release.
Shelton’s husband called 911 at 3:19 p.m. Friday after he came home and found his wife wasn’t breathing, according to the release. First responders confirmed she was dead.
When police discovered signs of trauma to the woman’s body, detectives started investigating the death as a homicide and considered Lozano a suspect, according to police. Sgt. Rebecca Innocenti said police would release information about the nature of the trauma after the medical examiner’s office determine the cause and manner of her death. The office is conducting an autopsy.
Maryland National Capital Park police arrested her near the home on Friday, Innocenti said.
Lozano spoke to investigators at police headquarters in Gaithersburg and “made a statement implicating herself in the assault of her great-grandmother,” police wrote.
