A 17-year-old boy was shot while he was walking back to his high school in Burtonsville on Monday morning, Montgomery County police said.
The teen was taken to a local hospital after the bullet grazed his cheek and ear, police said. He is expected to recover.
At about 8:50 a.m., the boy—a student at Paint Branch High School—walked into the Burtonsville Volunteer Fire Station and said he had been shot, according to police.
The teen told police he had left the school, which is at 14121 Old Columbia Pike, to walk to a nearby convenience store. When he was walking back to school, he heard a gunshot and realized he had been shot, he told police.
Based on the boy’s report, police believe the shooting was not random and the shooter or shooters were known to the victim, Officer Rick Goodale, a police spokesman, said. Police haven’t identified the shooter or shooters yet and don’t know if they go to the school.
Goodale said he didn’t know what convenience store the boy was walking to, but the fire station, at 13900 Old Columbia Pike, is less than a half-mile from the school.
“We’re just going off of what he’s telling us right now,” Goodale said. “We haven’t been able to find the crime scene yet or where the shooting occurred.”
Police have asked anyone with information about the shooting to call 240-773-6870 or leave an anonymous tip at 866-411-TIPS (8477) for a reward of up to $10,000 if information leads to an arrest or indictment.
