A man died after his car struck the back of a tractor trailer on the Beltway in Silver Spring on Thursday night, according to Maryland state police.

Reza Zati of Jessup, who was driving the car, was pronounced dead on the scene, according to a police press release. The driver of the truck, Syed Talib Raza, of Manassas, Virginia, was not injured.

According to police, a 2004 Honda Civic was driving behind a truck pulling a trailer in the same lane near Seminary Road just before midnight. The Honda struck the trailer and continued to drive underneath it until Raza felt the impact and pulled to the shoulder. He then saw the car was lodged beneath the trailer.

No one else was in the car.

Police said the Honda was traveling at a high rate of speed before the crash. Police did not know if drugs or alcohol were involved.

No further information was immediately available Friday morning. State police are investigating the crash.
