State residents might soon be able to send 911 requests by text

The Maryland Board of Public Works on Wednesday approved a contract that could allow 911 emergency responders to send and receive requests for help by text. The change would help Maryland residents who are deaf or hard of hearing or anyone who can’t talk while making an emergency request. The $2.4 million contract has a two-year term and is with an Annapolis-based company. Counties that decide to opt in to the new text system could have it up and running as soon as May.
