Silver Spring man shot and killed in Capitol Heights

Joseph Maurice Ward of Medway Street in the Wheaton area of Silver Spring was shot and killed in Capitol Heights on Wednesday. Prince George’s County police, responding to a call for a welfare check, found the 37-year-old suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was outside near a vacant house on Oates Street. 10 sick after carbon monoxide leak in businesses

Several businesses, including the Dollar Store and Hair Cuttery, in the 9800 block of Main Street in Damascus were evacuated after a carbon monoxide leak was detected Thursday evening. Ten people were sick and evaluated, though they’re expected to recover. The source was likely a propane “floor scrubber” used earlier in the day. [ABC7]

Bill would delay dropping charges against mentally ill defendants

Troy Turner, the father of two missing children that authorities allege were killed by Catherine Hoggle, testified in favor of a Maryland Senate bill that would allow a judge to delay dropping criminal charges against mentally ill defendants in order to protect minors. Hoggle, who’s been indicted on murder charges, will have the charges against her dropped in two years if she is still deemed mentally unfit for trial. [WTOP]

‘Murder-for-hire’ could become felony

Another bill in the Maryland House of Delegates would make solicitation of murder and conspiracy to commit murder felonies. Both are misdemeanors in the state. The Prince George’s County delegate sponsoring the bill cited the contract killing of 17-year-old Stacey Seaton in 2005. [WTOP]
