SunTrust bank is gearing up to move out of its downtown Bethesda building and put the 7500 Wisconsin Ave. property up for sale.
The bank at the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Old Georgetown Road will close Feb. 20 and reopen three days later in a new location less than a block away, an employee said Tuesday. The SunTrust is moving into a ground-floor space below the Element 28 apartments a.
The bank has operated for years at the 7500 Wisconsin address, in a stone building constructed in 1927. A corporate spokesman said SunTrust is “preparing to market the property for sale,” but had no other details about the future of the site.
SunTrust sold the property in 2008 for $5.5 million, but bought it back in 2016 for nearly $9.36 million, according to online land records. The zoning map for the Bethesda Downtown Sector Plan shows the property could be redeveloped with a building of up to 290 feet in height.
