1 – Why are you running for this office? (75 words max)
As a State Senator for the past eleven years, I am running again to continue the important work of ensuring our students receive a world-class education; tackling our ongoing transportation problems; growing our business and tax base; and protecting our environment, especially in light of recent Federal decisions.
2 – What is the most important issue in this race and what specific plans do you have to address it? (100 words max)
Since my time serving on the Montgomery Board of Education to now, public education has always been an important issue to me. In the last four years, our education system’s ranking has gone down and this is not acceptable. As a member of the Kirwan Commission on Innovation and Excellence in Education, I will continue to work with my colleagues to ensure that we have a system in place to ensure that our students are well equipped for the 21st century and that Maryland leads the nation in providing an educational system that prepares our students to succeed.
3 – What is one major issue the current Senate has handled poorly and what would you have done differently? (100 words max)
The Maryland Senate and the Maryland General Assembly as a whole has done an excellent job at both addressing issues that arise in our state as well as planning for our future needs. There is more that needs to be done, and my colleagues and I in the Maryland Senate will continue to tackle the difficult issues of transportation, education, affordable health care, affordable housing and environmental concerns.
4 – What experience (work, political or other) has prepared you to hold this office? (100 words max)
Most of my adult life has been spent in public service from volunteering in our public schools; to my years of service on the Montgomery County Board of Education; to my election to the House of Delegates and the Maryland Senate. I have a proven record of results and have worked tirelessly to enact legislation to improve the quality of life for all Marylanders. Additionally, as a small business owner for over 30 years, I have a unique perspective on the challenges facing Maryland’s employers and employees.
