MCFRS chief describes vulgar sexual comments, negative comments about diverse communities among staff

Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service firefighters have made a number of vulgar and other inappropriate comments to custodial staff, according to Chief Scott Goldstein. Goldstein sent a memo to the department describing “flirtatious comments,” “negative comments regarding diverse neighboring communities,” “vulgar, inappropriate sexual comments” and “comments/personal opinions regarding DACA.” No disciplinary action will be taken against any firefighter, but officials said they wanted to address the issue. Bill terminating parental rights for rapists expected to take effect immediately

Gov. Larry Hogan is set to sign a bill Tuesday morning that allows women who become pregnant as a result of a sexual assault to terminate the parental rights of their attacker. Advocates had fought for the passage of the measure for nine years before the General Assembly made the bill a priority this session. The law would take effect immediately. [Washington Post]

Expanding PE would require 133 more teachers

The General Assembly is considering a bill that would expand physical education classes for elementary schools to a minimum of 90 minutes per week. The effort is meant to curb childhood obesity, but Montgomery County Public Schools say they would need to hire 133 additional teachers at a cost of $11 million. [WTOP]

Metro sends crews to Baltimore to help transit shutdown

Metro sent equipment and about a dozen workers this weekend to help Baltimore in its emergency shutdown of its subway system for the month. The agency did not say who was paying for the contract workers. [Washington Post]
