A Silver Spring man who worked as a temporary school lunch-hour aide and as a day care employee has been charged with possession of child pornography.

Maryland State Police on Friday arrested Sean Renfrew Kelley, 30, of Silver Spring following an investigation that began in July 2017 when the agency received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The IP address involved in the reported illicit online activity led state police to an address in Silver Spring, according to an agency press release.

Upon learning of the allegations, Montgomery County Public Schools placed Kelley on administrative leave from his part-time job as a lunch-hour aide at Cloverly Elementary School in Silver Spring.

Melissa Brunson, the principal at Cloverly Elementary, told parents in a letter Friday that the digital images involved in the case were not photographs of any Montgomery County Public Schools students. State police suspect that the photographs are “commercial,” Brunson wrote.

“These charges are extremely upsetting and distressing. This type of behavior does not reflect the principles of MCPS or our community, and it will not be tolerated,” she wrote.

Kelley is also a former employee of Kids After Hours, a day care at Cannon Road Elementary School in Silver Spring, Brunson told parents.

State police arrested Kelley on Friday at his home at about 7 a.m., the agency’s release stated. He was taken to the Montgomery County jail and charged with three counts of distribution of imagery of a minor engaged in sexual conduct and seven counts of possession of imagery of an individual younger than 16 engaged in sexual conduct, the release stated.

He is being held without bail, online court records show.
