When he saw three teens allegedly stealing from a car early Wednesday morning, a man in northern Silver Spring shot at them several times, wounding one teenager, according to police.

Montgomery County police responded to the 1400 block of Twig Road, north of White Oak near the Intercounty Connector, after 3 a.m. Wednesday for the report of a theft from a vehicle.

When officers were looking for the possible thieves, a resident on the nearby Rossiter Court approached them and said he had seen another theft from a vehicle, according to a police press release. Police said the man told the officers he had confronted the three people. Using a handgun, the man fired several shots at the teens, he told police.

The three males then fled, according to police. The man turned his gun over to the officers.

A 911 call came in shortly after to report a shooting victim a few blocks away on Elm Grove Circle. Officers found a teen with an apparent gunshot wound in his lower body and determined he was one of the people the resident shot at.

The teen was taken to a hospital with injuries considered not life-threatening. Police arrested a juvenile male who was with him and arrested another juvenile male nearby on Good Hope Road, charging them both as juveniles on theft-related offenses.

Officer Rick Goodale, a police spokesman, wrote in an email that detectives will consult the State’s Attorney’s Office on charges for the shooter and the shooting victim.

Police do not release the names of juveniles charged with offenses and Goodale said the names of the injured 18-year-old and the resident with the gun will not be released unless they are charged.
