Democratic county executive candidates debate Wednesday
The six Democratic candidates for county executive are scheduled to appear at a debate hosted by Bethesda Beat and the Greater Chamber of Commerce Wednesday afternoon. The free debate begins at 4 p.m. at The National 4-H Conference Center at 7100 Connecticut Ave. in Chevy Chase.
Candidates who plan to participate include County Council members Roger Berliner, Marc Elrich and George Leventhal, as well as Del. Bill Frick (D-Bethesda), former Rockville Mayor Rose Krasnow and Potomac health care executive David Blair.
The Chamber of Commerce is hosting a reception after the debate from 5:30 to 7 p.m. that costs $70 for non-chamber members and $50 for members.
County Council to discuss child care, vote on parking permit changes
The Montgomery County Council on Tuesday is scheduled to receive a copy of the Office of Legislative Oversight’s report on the impact of infant and toddler childcare. The report will be released after the council votes to do so at its meeting Tuesday.
The council is also scheduled to vote on policy changes to the residential permit parking program. The program enables residents near urban areas who live close to Metro stations to obtain street parking permits. Many of the streets in these neighborhoods have restricted parking. The county introduced a digital system to provide permits in 2015, but some residents have struggled to obtain permits for visitors. In response, the county will begin providing paper permits again.
Community meeting on Wall Local Park plans
Montgomery Parks will host a community meeting Monday that starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Kennedy Shriver Aquatic Center in North Bethesda to discuss plans to improve Wall Park, the county park that borders the aquatic center and Old Georgetown Road. The county plans to expand the park using the current site of the surface parking lot next to the park and aquatic center. A parking garage is being built on the north side of the aquatic center to replace the surface lot.
Two open houses for U.S. 29 bus rapid transit project this week
The county is hosting two of its planned three open houses to present plans for a new bus rapid transit system on U.S. 29 this week. The first open house will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the East County Regional Service Center at 3300 Briggs Chaney Road in Silver Spring. The second is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Montgomery Blair High School cafeteria at 51 University Blvd. in Silver Spring.
Plans for the project call for installing the bus system along a 13.5-mile route from Burtonsville to the Silver Spring Transit Center. The third open house is scheduled for the evening of Nov. 20 at the Silver Spring Civic Center.
Progressive Neighbors hosting county executive forum Monday
The local political group Progressive Neighbors is scheduled to host two of the six Democratic candidates for Montgomery County executive at a forum Monday evening. Current County Council members Marc Elrich and George Leventhal plan to attend the forum, according to the group’s website. Progressive Neighbors notes on its website that it invited other candidates, but they are unable to participate. The forum begins at 7 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Center.
Mild temperatures expected this week
Partly sunny highs in the low-50s are predicted for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday with lows dropping into the upper-30s at night, according to the National Weather Service. There’s a chance of rain Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Thursday and Friday are expected to by mostly sunny with highs in the mid-50s and lows in the upper-30s.
