Community meeting on small cell tower antennas Monday night

Montgomery County officials will host a community meeting Monday night on a proposed zoning change that would enable small cell antennas to be placed on light poles and low-rise buildings as a way to increase cell coverage. The County Council is considering the change and has taken public input at several community meetings over the past few months. The latest meeting takes place Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the County Council Office Building in Rockville.

The County Council will take public input Tuesday evening on a plan being developed to rezone the area around the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Station. The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Council Office Building in Rockville.

The Planning Board in July approved a version of the sector plan to allow nearly 1,400 new homes as part of a mixed-use development on what is mostly a surface parking lot owned by Metro. The plan encompasses about 117 acres around the station, but much of the development would take place on the 15-acre property owned by Metro.

The plan would allow two buildings near the station that could stand as high as 300 feet and a third on Tuckerman Lane with a 220-foot height limit. Developer Fivesquares is proposing a mixed-use community at the site and has agreed to purchase the property from Metro once the sector plan work is finalized.

The council is not having a regular Tuesday meeting this week and is next scheduled to have a full session Oct. 31.
