Study finds Uber travel often faster than Metro inside D.C.
Uber is often a faster way to get around D.C. than Metro, according to a new study by the D.C. Office of the Chief Financial Officer. Metro is still the most efficient way of traveling between the city and the suburbs, but delays and night and weekend service reductions can slow travel on the transit system. Calling an Uber car is nearly as affordable as riding the Metro, if travelers split the cost, the study found. Mizeur starts nonprofit to train others in social advocacy
Heather Mizeur, a former state delegate from Montgomery County, has unveiled her new nonprofit, a group aimed at bridging partisan divides. The organization, MizMaryland: SoulForce Politics, will work to train people who want to get involved in social justice causes. Mizeur is also launching a podcast with her friend, rock musician Melissa Etheridge, and others about overcoming political divides. Mizeur ran an unsuccessful campaign for governor in 2014 and moved to the Eastern Shore following her loss. [Baltimore Sun]
Police seek identities of men in armed robbery at gas station
Montgomery County investigators have released surveillance footage from a Sept. 22 armed robbery at a Silver Spring gas station. Detectives say four masked men carrying handguns entered the Exxon station on Veirs Mill Road before 11:30 a.m. and demanded money from the clerk. A fifth man remained outside in a car, according to police. The station employee handed over cash, and the men fled. Police suspect that some of the same men were involved in a Sept. 1 armed robbery at a food truck in Silver Spring. [Montgomery County Police Department]
Former official details political forces that shaped county's growth
A former Montgomery County Planning Board chair has penned a 272-page book about the county's development. In "Suburb," Royce Hanson writes about the politics behind land-use decisions and evaluates the effectiveness of the county's strategy. Among other things, he finds fault with county policies meant to make sure infrastructure keeps up with development. Hanson served on the planning board from 1972 to 1981 and from 2006 to 2010.
