Police tase man who wore dog costume and wielded knife in Michaels
Montgomery County police were called to Michaels on Frederick Road in Germantown after a man wearing what appeared to be a dog costume was acting strangely and possibly holding a knife. When police arrived, he was no longer in the costume, but he allegedly advanced toward an officer while holding a knife. Police said a second officer used a Taser to stop the man as he headed toward the exit, in the path of customers. Police identified the man as Ludwin Joel Godoy-Mantar, 26, of an unconfirmed address, and charged him with reckless endangerment. [Police]
Anti-abortion group wants suspect charged with murder of pregnant teacher’s fetus
Americans United for Life, an anti-abortion advocacy group, wrote a letter calling for federal murder charges against Tyler Tessier for the killing of Laura Wallen’s unborn child. Tessier was arrested last month and charged with the murder of his girlfriend Wallen, an Olney teacher who was four months pregnant. State’s Attorney John McCarthy has said that fetal homicide charges are unlikely in this case. [WTOP]
Hurricane Maria supply drive in Rockville fills eight trucks
A Hurricane Maria supply drive at Dynamite Gymnastics Center in Rockville last weekend collected more than eight truckloads full of supplies, including bottled water, food and first aid. Virginia attorney general appeal’s D.C. sniper’s resentencing
Fifteen years ago this month, John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo carried out a series out shootings in the area, killing 10 people and wounding three more. Malvo, who was 17 at the time, could be resentenced after his attorney argued a life sentence without parole is unconstitutional for juveniles. The Virginia attorney general on Tuesday challenged a judge’s order to resentence him. Muhammad was executed in 2009. [NBC]
