Spring Center businesses closing
Businesses such as 7-Eleven and the El Aguila restaurant are exiting the Silver Spring shopping center on 16th Street because the commercial development will be demolished to make way for the Purple Line. The businesses are being given up to $60,000 by the state to close or move, but many business owners said that despite the money, the process is a struggle. [Washington Post]
College Park man arrested in fatal shooting of Silver Spring man
Prince George’s County police Monday charged Davie Serpas, 21, with first- and second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Rogelio Sierra-Duran, 24, of Silver Spring. The shooting happened early Sunday morning at an apartment in College Park, reportedly after an argument over a necklace. Donations being collected this weekend in Rockville for Hurricane Maria relief
Volunteers will be collecting supplies such as bottled water, hand sanitizer, canned food and over-the-counter medication from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Dynamite Gymnastics Center, 4956 Boiling Brook Parkway in Rockville on Saturday and Sunday. Supplies will be sent to Puerto Rico to help the recovery effort after Hurricane Maria. Volunteers also will accept construction supplies such as wheelbarrows, shovels, hammers and work gloves. Marriott not canceling conference hosted by anti-Muslim group
The Bethesda-based hotel giant said allowing the conference organized by ACT for America, which will focus on “grassroots” national security issues, does not indicate support for the organization.
