Montgomery County schools officials are trying to raise $163,000 for Texas students who are dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
The Montgomery County Public Schools campaign started Thursday and will last until Oct. 2, according to a press release. The school system is teaming up with the Montgomery County Public Schools Educational Foundation for the fundraising drive.
“We must support all children and heal each other in times of crisis,” Superintendent Jack Smith said in a prepared statement.
The relief campaign will provide financial assistance for school districts in areas affected by Hurricane Harvey and funds will be sent to an educational foundation in Texas, according to a press release. MCPS in the past has collected funds for victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the earthquake in Haiti.
People can donate through the educational foundation website.
School system rolls out report card changes
MCPS has tweaked elementary school report cards for this school year and is sharing the changes with parents.
Students in grades two through five will receive letter grades—an A, B, C or D—on their report cards. In past years, the elementary-age grading system was ES (exceptional), P (proficient), I (in progress) and N (not yet proficient).
Report cards for kindergarten students will now come out four times per year, instead of twice, MCPS announced. The revised report cards also will include the overall subject grade and reflect a new standard for measuring key learning skills, MCPS spokesman Derek Turner said.
Montgomery College gets two new trustees
Gov. Larry Hogan has appointed a longtime leader in education and a student to fill two vacancies on the Montgomery College Board of Trustees.
Michael Brintnall, one of the new trustees, has served as executive director of the American Political Science Association and of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration. Brintnall, who lives in Cabin John, was appointed to a term ending in 2023, according to a college press release.
Diyana Kahawita was appointed to serve for one year as the student trustee. The general studies major is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society and has won a number of academic awards, the release stated.
