A new poll finds Rep. John Delaney tied with President Donald Trump in support for the 2020 election.
The poll found that in a head-to-head matchup between Delaney and Trump, 38 percent of voters would support the president while 38 percent would support Delaney.
The left-leaning Public Policy Polling in North Carolina released the results of its poll on Wednesday. Delaney announced last month he plans to run for president in 2020 and would not seek re-election to his District 6 House seat in Maryland. Delaney, a Potomac resident who is in the middle of his third House term, is the only Democrat who has committed to running for president so far.
The polling firm surveyed 887 registered voters from Aug. 18 to 21, mostly by phone. Twenty percent of the respondents didn’t have a landline phone and took the survey over the internet through an opt-in panel.
The margin of error in the poll is 3.3 percent.
While the results may sound good for Delaney, who lacks the national profile of other Democrats, the firm found several other possible candidates polling well ahead of him against Trump.
For example, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders received 51 percent support compared to Trump’s 38, while former vice president Joe Biden had 51 percent to Trump’s 39. Even Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, who is not in politics, outpolled Trump 42 percent to 38 percent.

About 49 percent of the survey respondents said they would vote for a Democratic candidate if there were an election today, while 35 percent said they’d vote for a Republican and 15 percent were not sure.
