Two brothers deported from Montgomery County work on new life in El Salvador

Lizandro and Diego Claros Saravia were deported this month after a routine check-in with immigration officials. The brothers entered the U.S. illegally in 2009 and built a life in Montgomery County, where much of their family lives and where Lizandro starred on the Bethesda Soccer Club. The expulsion of the brothers sparked outrage from Democratic lawmakers and protests from Lizandro’s soccer teammates. Now living in their native El Salvador with an aunt and uncle, they worry about daily violence in an area now unfamiliar to them. [Washington Post]

Bethesda classmates reunite after more than 50 years to watch eclipse

As people across the country gathered to see the solar eclipse Monday, one group of former Bethesda classmates met up in Wyoming to see the spectacle. They shared a physics teacher more than 50 years ago, and he came up to watch the eclipse with them. [CBS]

School bus with campers on board catches fire in Silver Spring area

A school bus carrying about 30 kids from camp caught fire on Georgia Avenue in the Silver Spring area at about 4 p.m. Monday. The driver and campers got out safely before firefighters arrived, though one child was injured.

Leventhal links term limits to “right wing populism”

Cheryl Kagan posted on her Facebook page about the county’s bag tax, County Council Member George Leventhal chimed in with an unexpected comment linking the bag tax to term limits and the term limits to “right wing populism.” He wrote that residents have told him the bag tax was why many people voted for term limits. After battle with cancer, local attorney seeks House of Delegates seat

Vaughn Stewart, a 28-year-old attorney, is running as a Democrat for a seat in the House of Delegates for District 19, which covers parts of Silver Spring and Rockville. Only months ago, Vaughn was again diagnosed with cancer, which he was first diagnosed with at 18. The former policy director for Rep. Jamie Raskin’s congressional campaign has now been given a clean bill of health and says his struggle has given him more perspective on health care issues. [Maryland Matters]
