Roger Taney statue removed overnight
A crew used a crane to lift away the bronze statue of the controversial Supreme Court justice from the grounds of the State House in Annapolis around 2 a.m. Friday morning after state leaders voted this week to move it. Man allegedly prepared to burn down Rockville home to stave off lice
A Rockville man struggling with a lice problem inside his home on Ardennes Avenue reportedly started spreading gasoline around the outside of the home and inside the kitchen and dining room. He told his son and wife he was going to “let it burn a bit” to kill the lice, but they called police before a match was struck. The man was charged with attempted first-degree arson and reckless endangerment. [WJLA]
Gaithersburg tattoo shop boots anti-Semitic metal band from live show
The Texas-based band Nyogthaeblisz was scheduled to play a show at the shop Raw Ink on Friday night, but when shop owner Bobby Weschler found out about the band’s anti-Semitic views, he kicked it off the bill. The shop uses outside promoters to book acts for its shows, and the band was booked by a Massachusetts promoter. [Washington City Paper]
Silver Spring man drowns in Garrett County
Police said Giancarlo Garcia, 24, drowned while swimming Sunday at Swallow Falls State Park in the Western Maryland county. The man was swimming with a friend near the park’s lower falls when, investigators believe, he was sucked under near the waterfall. Despite rescue attempts by bystanders, he never resurfaced. Evening showers expected
Showers and thunderstorms are likely after 5 p.m. and a high near 91 is predicted Friday. The low is expected to drop to around 70 degrees tonight, according to the National Weather Service.
