Police say Rockville woman caught using fake tickets at bumper car ride
A Rockville woman last week was charged with using counterfeit tickets to get on a bumper car ride at a Delaware amusement park. Police said Marilyn Hammerman, 81, was caught with about 20 fraudulent tickets at Funland in Rehoboth Beach on Wednesday. An amusement park employee flagged the fake tickets, according to police. Hammerman was arrested and charged with theft of services less than $1,500, police reported. [WJLA]
Library nonprofit sells autographed copy of Hemingway novel
An autographed, first-edition copy of Ernest Hemingway’s classic “Farewell to Arms” has become the highest-grossing book ever sold by Friends of the Library Montgomery County. The group sold the volume for $6,000 to a buyer in Oregon, according to FOLMC’s business coordinator. The copy of the 1929 novel turned up inside a liquor box that was donated to FOLMC in November 2015. The proceeds from the sale will be used to benefit libraries around the county. Jealous picks up gubernatorial endorsement from progressive group
A statewide progressive group has endorsed former NAACP president Ben Jealous for Maryland governor in 2018. The group, Maryland Working Families, declared its support for Jealous on Friday. “Ben is unafraid of challenging the status quo and standing up for what is right,” Charly Carter, executive director of Maryland Working Families, said in a statement. Jealous has also received support from progressives such as U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Our Revolution. [Washington Post]
Paddlers demonstrate against pipeline under Potomac
A group of kayakers on Friday demonstrated near Sharpsburg to oppose the construction of a natural-gas pipeline under the Potomac River. The pipeline, proposed as part of TransCanada’s Eastern Panhandle Expansion Project, would run from Pennsylvania to West Virginia and pass through Maryland. Environmental groups have protested all summer, saying a pipeline leak could contaminate drinking water. TransCanada argues that the project would bolster West Virginia’s economy. [Washington Post]
