Firefighters put out a fire at a Silver Spring house with ‘severe hoarding’ on Sunday, a fire department spokesman said.

After a passerby reported seeing smoke coming from the roof of a house, firefighters responded to the 10000 block of Greenock Road in Silver Spring at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service spokesman Pete Piringer said Monday. The fire, which was largely confined to the basement, was under control after a short time.

No one was injured, but the fire caused about $100,000 in damage to the house, which had "some pretty significant hoarding conditions," Piringer said. Many loose materials and items were splayed across the yard, after firefighters extinguished the flames inside.

The fire department determined the fire resulted from combustibles that were too close to a refrigerator, Piringer said. A motor on the fridge overheated and caused nearby items to catch fire.
