Carluccio’s, an Italian restaurant and market, has closed in Pike & Rose.
“After careful consideration we are sorry to say we have closed our doors for good,” a sign on the door of the restaurant reads. “We will miss you all dearly.”
The United Kingdom-based chain has closed its two U.S. locations, a spokeswoman for Pike & Rose said. The North Bethesda restaurant occupied a 4,600-square-foot space at 11826 Trade St., next to Owen’s Ordinary.
In addition to a full menu of Italian dishes, Carluccio’s featured a breakfast café and a market that served baked goods and imported products from Italy. The chain was founded by Antonio Carluccio, a Italian-born cook in England. Its other U.S. location was in Alexandria, Virginia, which the Washington Business Journal reports has also closed.
The Pike & Rose restaurant, which opened in March last year, had a casual space along a pedestrian walkway with an outdoor patio. The furniture remains in place in the restaurant but some items have been put into boxes.
“We were disappointed to learn that Carluccio’s has closed its U.S. locations, including its space at Pike and Rose,” Jill McCarthy, marketing director for Pike & Rose, wrote in an email statement Tuesday. “With the momentum of Phase 2 [of Pike & Rose], and the new openings we having coming in 2017-18, we’re excited about the potential for other new restaurants and shops to join the Pike and Rose neighborhood.”
