Madaleno blasts Hogan for fundraising letter's rhetoric

Richard Madaleno Jr. is looking to capture the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, although he hasn't formally launched his candidacy. Madaleno said Hogan's letter employed "Trump tactics of dividing our communities." In the letter, Hogan had highlighted his work on the state budget and accused Democratic lawmakers of trying to create safe havens for illegal immigrants in Maryland. [Washington Post]
Host of candidates eye public financing for 2018 races
Seventeen candidates in Montgomery County have voiced interest in seeking matching public funds for their 2018 campaigns. A new public financing law limits candidates who receive the funds to individual contributions of $150 or less. Council members George Leventhal and Marc Elrich and attorney Robin Ficker have expressed their intention of using the matching funds in their bids for county executive. The system could give a boost to lesser-known candidates who would've struggled to compete against opponents backed by the well-moneyed development and business communities. [Washington Post]
Metro's oldest railcars to retire by month's end
Metro system officials will retire their oldest, least reliable railcars by July 1, they announced Wednesday. The 1000- and 4000-series cars will be decommissioned months ahead of schedule. Metro will be replacing them with the 7000-series cars, which they say are up to six times as reliable. The switch-out is part of the system's Back2Good program, an effort to improve service. The system has bought 748 new railcars and has seen a decline in Metro delays since officials began taking the older models out of service. [WMATA]
