County Council introduces bills, votes on appointments, considers turf funding

The County Council will be introducing several bills at its meeting Tuesday, including one relating to tax credit for retired military service members and another for regulating off-street parking and public parking facilities. Both will have a public hearing at 1:30 p.m. June 13.

The council will also vote on the confirmation of several of County Executive Ike Leggett’s appointments to several committees and boards. Members also will consider appropriating $4.9 million in funding for artificial turf installation at Julius West Middle School and Albert Einstein and Walt Whitman High Schools.

Planning Board discusses recommendations for Grosvenor-Strathmore plan

The Planning Board is meeting Thursday to discuss preliminary recommendations for the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Area plan, touching on zoning, parks and transportation. The staff is set to present a working draft of the plan to the board May 18, after which a public hearing date will be set.

Hearings for Rockville High School rape suspect and Richard Montgomery security leader

On Friday, attorneys for Jose Montano, the 17-year-old accused of raping a fellow student at Rockville High School in March, will ask the court to dismiss felony charges against him in the Montgomery County District Court in Rockville. Henry Sanchez Milian, the other suspect in the Rockville rape, will next be in court May 12.

Mark Yantsos, 57, who was charged with sexually abusing a 17-year-old student while acting as head of security at Richard Montgomery High School, will also seek felony charges to be dismissed Friday morning. He is currently out on $75,000 bond.

Rain at the beginning and end of the week

After some showers Monday afternoon and evening, Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be nicer, with highs in the upper 60s and 70s, according to the National Weather Service. Then the rain returns on Thursday and Friday, with high chance of precipitation and cloudy days, though temperatures will still be in the 60s and 70s.
