Delaney wins gubernatorial straw poll
U.S. Rep. John Delaney captured first place in a gubernatorial straw poll conducted by a group of Democrats in western Maryland on Saturday. The 188-vote contest took place during the annual summit for Democratic Party members. Delaney beat Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz, former NAACP head Benjamin Jealous and several others. Three injured, one dead in Germantown shooting
A Germantown shooting on Saturday left one person dead and three others injured, according to Montgomery County police. Multiple callers alerted authorities at about 12:55 a.m. to the shooting at a home in the 12800 block of Kitchen House Way. Officers and rescue workers found two men and two women at the home suffering from gunshot wounds, a police press release stated. One man died, and the three other wounded people were taken to the hospital with injuries that weren’t life-threatening, police reported. Detectives are investigating. Poolesville ditches ice rink project
The town of Poolesville has given up its plans for building a synthetic ice rink that would give young people a place to skate locally. Officials since last year have been researching a project to build a rink in town, but cost concerns have led them to abandon the effort. The rink would’ve been a partnership between the county, which offered $140,000 toward the project, and the town, which would’ve contributed land and handled maintenance. However, the town manager said residents were told earlier this year that the rink project had fizzled. [Montgomery Community Media]
Hogan gives eulogy at his father’s funeral
Gov. Larry Hogan gave a eulogy for his father, former Rep. Lawrence J. Hogan Sr., during a Saturday funeral service. Hogan called his father a “hero” during the Mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Annapolis. Former Govs. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. and Parris N. Glendening and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie were present for the service. Hogan’s father, a three-term Republican congressman, died April 20 at the age of 88. [Baltimore Sun]
Governor names former Montgomery County judge to top post
A former Montgomery County judge has been appointed to head the Maryland Court of Special Appeals. Gov. Larry Hogan named Special Appeals Judge Patrick L. Woodward to serve as chief judge starting May 6. Woodward was previously a judge in Montgomery County’s Circuit and District courts. [Baltimore Sun]
