SHA to install pedestrian safety signals at Veirs Mill Road and Turkey Branch Parkway intersection
A new flashing signal will be installed at the intersection of Veirs Mill Road and Turkey Branch Parkway, which will constantly display a flashing yellow caution light. After a pedestrian or bicyclist presses a crossing button, the signal turns solid red. The change is meant to improve safety at the crossing, where two people died in the past two years. [WTOP]
General Assembly passes state budget, controversial school bill, Planned Parenthood legislation
The General Assembly passed a revised state budget that restores much of what Gov. Larry Hogan proposed to cut, including state reimbursement for developmentally disabled care providers, college scholarships for poor students and additional mentorship for teachers. Maryland’s legislative body passed a bill setting up an accountability system for rating schools and preventing the use of vouchers and charters to fix failing schools. Hogan promised to veto this bill, but it was passed with a veto-proof majority. The Senate also voted in favor of a bill that would require the state to reimburse Planned Parenthood for healthcare services if Congress cuts its federal funding. [Washington Post]
Maryland senators to oppose Supreme Court nominee Gorsuch
Sens. Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin announced Tuesday they will oppose the nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch, President Donald Trump’s nominee to the Supreme Court. Both Democratic senators suggested Gorsuch cannot separate his political views from his legal judgment. Van Hollen has also committed to join in the filibuster to prevent Gorsuch from getting a vote. Tom Perez asks for resignation letters from entire DNC staff
Former Montgomery County Council member and newly elected chairman of the Democratic National Committee Tom Perez has announced he is asking for resignation letters from all staffers in the organization, amounting to a complete overhaul after a year of controversy and mismanagement for the DNC. Perez said he will then review whether any employees will stay as he reconfigures the committee. [NBC]
