Montgomery County education leaders to discuss recovery school
The Montgomery County school board in coming months is expected to talk about creating a recovery school for students who have struggled with drug abuse. The conversation is surfacing amid the rise in opioid and heroin addiction across the nation. One recovery school, Phoenix in Montgomery County, opened its doors in 1979 and is thought to be the first of its kind in the nation. However, it closed about four years ago. Now, some are urging school board members to look at reopening a recovery school in the county. “I believe there is a need out there, and I believe we certainly could have enough students involved in this to make it successful,” school board member Rebecca Smondrowski said. Rockville masseur charged with groping client
Montgomery County police have charged a 63-year-old masseur with sexually assaulting a client in Rockville. The woman in June reportedly paid for a massage from Habibollah Jadidi of Laurel at Massage Heights, a business along Rockville Pike, according to police. The woman told police that Jadidi groped her during the massage. The massage parlor is part of a nationwide franchise chain, which released a statement indicating that the business had fired Jadidi immediately after learning of the allegations. Jadidi is charged with fourth-degree sexual assault and second-degree assault and is due to appear in court April 21. [WJLA]
Planning for power line trails could wrap up by month’s end
Design work is under way for building trails along Montgomery County’s power lines. The trail project was part of the merger settlement agreement between Pepco and Exelon. The project planning could be wrapped up by the month’s end. Local cyclists are reporting that the trail will follow two routes. [Washcycle]
Revised plans unveiled for Elizabeth Square in Silver Spring
The Silver Spring Urban District Advisory Committee last week saw revised plans for a 120,000-square-foot aquatic center in Silver Spring. The Elizabeth Square proposal involves a mixture of retail space, homes and recreational centers. The revised plan for the recreational center includes an 11-lane pool, a gymnasium with a basketball court, a social hall, activity rooms, art space, play areas, exercise rooms and a café. Project partners hope to begin work late this year and complete it by 2020. [Source of the Spring]
Mild weather expected for Monday
Temperatures are expected to climb into the mid-50s on Monday, with skies staying sunny, according to the National Weather Service. Showers will roll in later at night starting at about 11 p.m., and patchy fog could cover the area during the early morning.
