Montgomery County education leaders to discuss recovery school
The Montgomery County school board in coming months is expected to talk about creating a recovery school for students who have struggled with drug abuse. The conversation is surfacing amid the rise in opioid and heroin addiction across the nation. One recovery school, Phoenix in Montgomery County, opened its doors in 1979 and is thought to be the first of its kind in the nation. However, it closed about four years ago. Now, some are urging school board members to look at reopening a recovery school in the county. “I believe there is a need out there, and I believe we certainly could have enough students involved in this to make it successful,” school board member Rebecca Smondrowski said.
