This week’s snowfall is causing delayed openings for athletic fields at Montgomery County parks and schools.

Sports teams are barred from playing or practicing on the fields until Monday at the earliest as a safety precaution and to protect the turf, according to a Montgomery Parks announcement. On Monday, parks staff will check out the fields to see if they are ready to open.

Residents can find updates about the field status by phone at 301-579-5610. To check on an individual field, the caller must enter the field’s extension, which is listed at

www.montgomeryparks.org/rainoutline. Information on fields is also available through the free RainOutLine app and online.

The park system supervises 296 athletic fields, including some at elementary and middle schools and Montgomery Blair High School; the fields at local parks are closed from Dec. 1 through March 14, while fields at regional parks are closed from Dec. 1 through March 31 and Aug. 1 through 15.
