Plus: Meeting scheduled on urban parks and candidate filing begins for 2018

County Council to discuss Bethesda Downtown Sector Plan transportation issues Monday

The council’s Planning, Housing and Economic Development committee will examine the anticipated traffic impact on intersections and roadways in downtown Bethesda as part of its work on the updated sector plan Monday afternoon. The plan will guide downtown development over the next two decades and council members are holding the hearing to help better understand how increasing height limits and density for certain properties could affect traffic.

Also, council member George Leventhal is scheduled to introduce Tuesday a bill that calls for the county to alter its vending machine contracts to make sure at least 50 percent of offered items meet healthy standards.

Residents are invited to attend the meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the planning department’s 8787 Georgia Ave. headquarters in Silver Spring. Candidate filings open for 2018 election

The first formal date for political candidates to file for local, state and federal offices for the 2018 election is Tuesday. Candidates will have until Feb. 27, 2018, to file in order to be included on the ballot in the state. In Montgomery County, four County Council seats and the county executive position will be open as incumbents must step down due to term limits, creating a political vacuum that’s expected to draw dozens of candidates to run for the open seats.
