Adega Wine Cellars & Café, a downtown Silver Spring staple that served café-style meals with wine and beer, closed indefinitely Sunday.

The closing was “due to unforeseen circumstances,” according to a sign on the door. The sign also thanked customers for their support. The owners were not available Tuesday for comment.

Located at 8519 Fenton St., Adega Wine Cellars & Café opened in August 2003. At the time, owner Walter Rhee said he wanted to establish a place where he could mix his love of gourmet cooking and fine wine, according to the restaurant’s website.

The restaurant, which drew a large lunch crowd from neighboring businesses, was among the new establishments to open during the redevelopment of the downtown Silver Spring area in the early 2000s. According to the restaurant’s website, the owners were “proud to have been one of the pioneers of the revitalization of Downtown Silver Spring.”
